these were made at times when i didn't have enough studio space.
to layout a sculpture.
i got the idea from a poetry box, texture sculpture created
by Sophia. ...?... in 1995. there was something magical about
a matchbox, and something intimate about the size.
rather than feel crowded and crazy, i miniaturized.
i had this plastic wrapped block of wooden matches.
they were separated into about 24 different boxes.
the images below are the actual size of the boxes.
i had some rules for making these.
rules for matchbook collages:
only one may be created at a time.
all of the matches must be used from the box before beginning the next box. (this led to a lot of candle burning and taking up smoking for an change of character on occasion.)
the images must be glued down with iridescent paint. (i didn't have any glue.)
the images must have a meaning pertinent to the current situation in your life. they cannot just feel right. they can begin as a feeling, but the feeling must be defined before committing the image to the box.
no images may be pasted over or hidden.
these rules still apply.
i still find myself making at least two of these collages per year.
they are about as close as i get to functional art anymore...
